Biogen ''at forefront'' of MS research and development

Pharmaceutical firm Biogen has positioned itself at the forefront of research and development for multiple sclerosis (MS) treatments, it has claimed.
Representatives from the company are set to discuss its work at the 61st annual meeting of the American Academy of Neurology, which takes place between April 25th and May 2nd.
Two of its therapies have been approved for use and additional compounds are currently in development.
Vice-president and chief medical officer Michael Panzara said the company was "redefining success" for MS patients.
"We are even seeing some clinical trial patients who are free from MS disease activity or with physical improvement from what was seen at baseline," he explained.
The company has a compound, known as PEGylated interferon beta-1a, ready to enter Phase III testing with a few months, he added.
Its high titer process for the production of Tysabri (natalizumab) was today (April 16th) approved by the US Food and Drug administration following the December approval of from the European Medicines Agency.
