GSK releases over the counter weight loss drug
21 Apr 2009
Following its announcement of a merger with Stiefel, GlaxoSmithKlien (GSK) has released Europe''s first over the counter weight loss aid.
The pharmaceutical company began selling alli - otherwise known as orlistat - in 60 mg doses yesterday (April 20th).
It is the first time a non-prescription licence for a weight loss medication has been issued by the European Commission.
Clinical trials showed the drug, when used in conjunction with a reduced calorie and low-fat diet, can help patients lose up to 50 per cent more weight than by dieting alone.
The drug works by stopping some of the digested fat being absorbed by the body.
The medication is now being sold exclusively through pharmacies across all 27 European Union member states.
It is recommended that the product be used by people with a body mass index of 28 kg/m sq or more.
GSK yesterday said it hopes its merger with Stiefel will create a world leader in dermatology pharmaceuticals.
