Pfizer wins ethical accreditation
07 Apr 2009
Pfizer has become the first pharmaceutical company in the world to be accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programmes (AAHRPP) for ensuring the protection of human subjects in its early-stage clinical trials.
The company''s research units in the US, Brussels, Belgium and Singapore were all awarded accreditation following a 15-month examination of clinical practices.
As an independent body, the AAHRPP is a not-for-profit organisation that promotes ethically sound studies of the highest quality.
Those seeking approval must provide tangible evidence of principled policies, procedures and practices to protect human rights - something that Pfizer is committed to, according to the company''s president of global research and development Martin Mackay.
"Accreditation is tangible evidence of our continuing commitment to maintain the highest global standards for research by protecting the human rights of the individuals who take part in our early-stage clinical trials," he said.
The firm is set to merge with Wyeth by the end of the year, although the Federal Trade Commission recently asked for more information on the deal.
