Roche MRSA test to be used in EU

02 Apr 2009

A new test to help detect methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is set to be introduced in the European Union (EU).

Research-focused healthcare group Roche announced today (April 2nd) that its LightCycler MRSA Advanced Test is now available for clinical use in Europe,

The qualitative in vitro diagnostic test will help prevent and control the bug in healthcare facilities.

Head of Roche molecular diagnostics Daniel O''Day explained it is important for health professionals to have access to fast and reliable products.

"This new test will aid infection control programs, and ultimately result in better patient care," he said.

Professionals can test for the bug by using the equipment to examine nasal swab specimens from patients suspected of infection.

MRSA has been in the news recently due to a number of high-profile cases combined with its difficulty to treat.

Last month, Roche successfully acquired Genentech in a short-form merger, paying US$95 (£64.53) per share.ADNFCR-2086-ID-19106135-ADNFCR
