Sanofi-Aventis to acquire BiPar Sciences

15 Apr 2009

Pharmaceutical firm Sanofi-Aventis has announced it is taking steps to reinforce its oncology research and development portfolio by acquiring BiPar Sciences.

The parent company''s chief executive Christopher A Viehbacher explained the company was determined to improve and expand its operations by merging with the privately-held business.

He said the move shows an attempt to look at new approaches to strengthening its pipeline.

"This acquisition illustrates our strong commitment to oncology to provide patients, physicians and public health stakeholders with breakthrough medicines addressing unmet medical needs," Mr Viehbacher added.

One of the leaders in the DNA field, the Paris-based firm uses Poly ADP-Ribose Polymerase inhibitors to target and kill cancer cells.

The move is subject to the acceptance of the Federal Trade Commission and is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2009.

It comes a week after Sanofi-Aventis agreed to take over Brazilian Firm Medley.
