Knowledge makes pharmacists "well-placed" to provide vascular checks
23 Feb 2009
Accessibility and clinical knowledge means pharmacists are "well-placed" to provide vascular checks in the local community, it has been asserted.
Head of practice at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) Heidi Wright states: "Community pharmacists are well-placed to implement the new vascular check programme."
She adds the fact that a number of primary care trusts have already spoken to pharmacists to begin the scheme shows how confident they are in the healthcare professional''s resources and abilities.
The vascular check scheme referred to by Ms Wright is set to be launched in England an April, with a widespread roll out planned to be finished between 2012 and 2013.
The RPSBG representative states the Department of Health recognises the fact that such checks are suitable for delivery in a range of environments, one of which is pharmacy.
In recent days, the RPSGB launched a report - called The Contribution of Pharmacy to Making Britain a Safer Place to Take Medicines - which urges action on medicine safety.
