Life Technologies summarises contribution to 1000 Genomes Project

16 Feb 2009

Life Technologies and Baylor College of Medicine''s Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) have outlined their contribution to the first data release of the 1000 Genomes Project.

The former, which was created via the merger of Invitrogen and Applied Biosystems, said the move enabled scientists to look at technology performance on a range of biological samples.

It states that more than 460 gigabases of unique mappable sequence data has been generated by the SOLiD System, representing more than 65 per cent more than the target for the organisations when the project was first conceived.

Commenting, Donna Muzny, director of operations at the HGSC, said: "One of the reasons we chose the SOLiD System for this research was because of the ability to generate mate-pair reads with inserts from one to three kilobases, which provides very good placement of the reads."

In recent days, Life Technologies announced its fourth-quarter and final-year 2008 results.ADNFCR-2086-ID-19028355-ADNFCR
