Abbott continues Absorb clinical trial
25 Mar 2009
Abbott has initiated the next stage in its Absorb clinical trial to examine the performance and safety of its drug-eluting coronary stent.
The pharmaceutical company explains this latest phase of the trial will see around 80 patients based in ten centres around Europe, New Zealand and Australia participate.
The first stage showed Abbott''s bioabsorbable everolimus eluting stent was successful in treating coronary artery disease.
Dr Patrick Serruys, professor of interventional cardiology at the Thoraxcentre at Rotterdam''s Erasmus University Hospital, notes drug-eluting metal stents represent the latest evolution in angioplasty.
"Now, we have the fourth revolution in interventional cardiology technology and patient outcomes from the first stage of Absorb clearly show that bioabsorbable devices are the future of coronary artery disease treatment," he adds.
Abbott announced today that it will announce its first-quarter 2009 results in a conference set to take place on April 15th, before the financial markets open.
